The Process Of Grief Counseling

By Jason Hughes

Losing a loved one can be extremely traumatic. You will go through many different emotions that range from guilt, anger, self blame and much sadness of course. This is not easy to deal with on your own. In fact, when you attempt to handle these emotions on your own, you may never find a way to cope. The pain will ease up over time, and it will even be difficult with grief counseling. However, with therapy, you will find that it can be easier to deal with.

It can affect you in different ways. Some people would be very close to their loved one. In the beginning, you will feel like giving up on life. However, as time goes by this will improve. The counselling helps you to set goals and to know what to do when you are feeling depressed or anxious. You will be relieved when you find out that there are stages of grief which is something that everyone goes through.

It can also affect you when you have suffered in your childhood years. You may have blocked this out. However, you never forget about the memories. They will exist in your subconscious. You may have suffered in your young days when a parent died and you were feeling abandoned.

It could be the fact that you depended on a spouse and you had a very good relationship with them. You may feel at a loss. You will also need to handle your finances at this point. In addition to this, you will also have small children that need attention. They need to be nurtured because they will also be going through a lot of issues that need to be dealt with.

There are different techniques that a counsellor like this will use. It can depend on the situation. For example, there will be families that need to be counselled together. They need to find a way where they will have to readjust to a new way of life. Sometimes you have to reinvent yourself, especially when you have lost someone who was very dear to you. You may become depressed, anxious and withdrawn. The motivation and encouragement that you receive at this time can be extremely valuable.

It can be a time of confusion because you will be angry and you will want to blame your loved one. You will also want to blame God and you will feel bad about this. On the other hand, you will miss the person who has died. This is something that goes around in your mind on a daily basis.

You need to be aware that there are serious cases which can affect you greatly. Post traumatic stress disorder can develop as a result. If you don't deal with this, you will have a hard time functioning on a day to day basis. Working with other people in a group format is useful because you would have all suffered in the same way.

You begin to connect on this basis. People build relationships based on the way they feel with one another. They may find that friends and individual therapists don't understand what they are going through. This is the reason for a group.
