By Sharron Cantu

Urgent care applies to anyone suffering from injuries or conditions that need to be treated right away, or else the symptoms may worsen. If you fall into this category and require assistance, visit a New York urgent care facility. If the injury isn't outright incredibly serious yet time-sensitive, this is the best option for you.

If you've experienced a small accident such as falling off a skateboard and twisted your ankle, you may have to visit this category of walk-in clinic center. If the injury is extreme enough to the point where you can't even walk to touch it without feeling immense pain, you shouldn't just let it be. It may not be life-threatening, but if not properly cared for, your ankle may never be the same. Emergency room are expensive and your regular doctor might not have enough time to see you. This is when walk-in clinic centers are great to have available.

You can think of this category of walk-in clinic center as being a facility that is in between your general practitioner and an emergency room. It open for long hours and you can walk right in if you need to. They are perfectly capable of dealing with minor emergencies, and probably a whole lot better for them than busy emergency rooms.

This category of walk-in clinic centers must meet the rules of any of the two categories of the Urgent Care Association of America. If the facility is Category 1, a licensed physician must be present during all open hours. Alternatively, Category 2 involves having either a licensed nurse practitioner of physician during operation hours. For both categories, a licensed doctor must be at the head of staff in the center.

Some category of walk-in clinic centers will specify certain hours where they will only take pediatric patients. Otherwise, they should accept patients of all ages. All centers are required to have patient restrooms, two exam rooms, and a waiting room. Additionally, they need to be open every day for at least four hours every day, leading up to three thousand hours a year. If the center isn't regulated as it is supposed to, this rule can be waived if it is within five miles of a proper one.

All the practitioners on site will have to be able to perform minor procedures and work IVs. They will also have to be able to use the X-rays, phlebotomy services, drug carts, oxygen, and automatic external defibrillators. Additionally, there must be phones available on the premises.

If you were to choose to visit an emergency room, you may have to wait in line or hours before you can be seen if your injuries aren't life threatening. Either that, or you need to wait for your doctor to open his office for an appointment. In both scenarios, you would need to wait quite a while to be seen when you could easily be seen by a perfectly qualified practitioner at this category of walk-in clinic center.

Getting affordable care at an urgent care center is as easy as just walking in. No appointments are necessary, and you will be seen very quickly, basically within thirty minutes. Additionally, you will probably be seen by a dedicated doctor since you aren't in a frantic emergency room.
