A nutritionist is a professional who specializes in advising clients on matters relating to impact of food and nutrition on health. These professionals go by different terms depending on context, employment setting, and country. Typically, the minimum academic qualification for becoming a nutritionist is a degree. A degree in food and nutrition is most preferable. Before starting to practice in this field, one must obtain a license and certification. The process of certification and licensure varies a lot in the various states in the US. Some require practitioner to obtain special certification, which they have to renew annually. Other states require practitioners to complete and exam and prove that they have the skills and knowledge needed in the field. One should know what is required in their training before proceeding with training.

One is free to start sending applications for jobs once they are certified and licensed. It is worth knowing that as a nutritionist, there are many work responsibilities one will be charged with. Also, collaborating with other professionals is necessary sometimes. One can work in a hospital, food company, media industry, or anywhere that is involved with food production.

One of the responsibilities that nutritionists handle is to conduct research. As researchers, they may be part of a team involved in finding a solution to a problem. Some of the places where research nutritionists are employed are research facilities and educational institutions. When working as researchers, they may participate in the recruitment of volunteers to take part in clinical trials.

Nutritionists process and analyze biological samples, raise awareness on benefits of healthy eating, give talks, deliver presentations, gather statistics, and aim healthy eating campaigns at specific groups. They stay abreast with latest research in the field of nutrition so that they can educate people. These professionals also participate in programs that aim at ensuring that people have easy access to healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits.

The work of nutritionists is done from Monday to Friday, with an average of 37 hours per week. Some of the skills one needs include excellent communication skills, keen interest in healthy eating, good evaluation skills, good reporting skills, good people skills, and a non-judgmental attitude. One should be able to deal with different people in different situations.
