Best Ways For Straightening Your Teeth

By Harry Izzo

To get your teeth straightened there are many methods. Depending on how badly your teeth are misaligned there is a procedure suited for you. Here are a few options your dentist might recommend.

By far the most widely used procedure is braces. These come in two styles: metal and invisible. Most everyone is familiar with metal braces. A more recent development is invisible braces. While metal braces can take a number of months to straighten your teeth, invisible braces take a lot less time. Metal braces can't be removed any time you want; you have to wait for your teeth to straighten to a certain point. Invisible braces on the other hand are removable and can be taken out of your mouth for eating and cleaning times. These braces are also hardly noticeable when standing in front of another person.

Aligners fall somewhere in between invisible and metal braces. They form a wall on both sides of your teeth to straighten them. The front wall is invisible so no one knows you're wearing them. They are primarily used to straighten the front teeth. A number of patients have reported a certain discomfort in wearing them.

Veneers are better than braces if you have chipped or unusually sharp teeth. Thin porcelain shells are bonded to your teeth to give them a normal shape. They are not removable, but needs to be replaced after 5 to 10 years.

An alternative to veneers is contouring. Chipped teeth are given a better shape with this procedure. Teeth that are too long can be shortened to give you a more aligned smile.

Last but not least, you can use surgery to straighten your teeth. This procedure is very expensive and is primarily a treatment for a misaligned jaw. As a last resort, when none of the other treatments can be employed, surgery might be the one for you. Be prepared for the expense and the fact that you will probably have to wear braces when the surgery is completed. It takes a long time to get the results you want after surgery is done, so be prepared for that also.

Some people think that having crooked teeth ruins your appearance, while others think that is what gives a person their charm. Before you have any treatment done, weigh the pros and cons, so that you are happy with the final results.
