Why Do People Opt For Dental Implants

By Harry Izzo

The health of your teeth is a physical attribute most people key in on. In fact many people blame their social situation on the look of their mouth. It gets worse as we get older. Our teeth get discolored, we lose a few and some of us even have accidents that damage them permanently. Your teeth are like a calling card and many people base their first impression of you off of them.

Many years ago when people lost their teeth and their only options were either dentures or bridges. While these temporarily fixed the issue, bridges were very hard to maintain. They were hard to floss and this increased the frequency of serious periodontal diseases. Bridges were not a permanent solution and they were the reason why people suffered from gum and bone diseases.

Dental implants are preferable to bridges for this and other reasons. They are a more permanent solution to the problem. They are not as expensive, because they do not have to be replaced as often as bridges. And most importantly, they are made of better material. With them you will have fewer worries about eating, chewing or speaking for many years.

Dental implants are great because they never decay. And the surrounding teeth don't need to have crowns to hold them in place. This is a lot different than having bridges installed. The adjoining teeth never have the worry of becoming decayed and their crowns never have to be replaced.

Most insurance policies do not cover dental implants and that is what makes them more expensive. However one big plus to dental implants is that they are easy to take care of and so they last a very long time as a result. Even though bridges may sound cheaper, their life expectancy is only a maximum of maybe 10 years. If you are going to invest in your mouth, implants are of better option for many people. They are a good investment and they have a very high rate of success.

Everyone is a candidate for dental implants, except diabetics or smokers. These patients have a lower supply of blood flowing in their mouth. This makes it difficult for the dental implant to fuse with your jawbone.

Be sure to visit a dentist that specializes in this form of dentistry to increase your odds of success.
