Acupuncture For Back Pain Relief

By Neil P. Hines

Around 80% of people on the planet suffer from back pain once or more during their lifetime. It's known to be one of the foremost reasons for seeing a doctor and taking medication. It's no big surprise either that more and more people are choosing to try acupuncture for back pain relief.

The problem is that western medicine doesn't really have any answers for chronic pain relief other than painkillers which tend to be addictive and cause a whole lot of other side effects. Sometimes, even that won't work so the patient has to undergo risky and costly surgery followed by a long and painful recovery process involving physical therapy. An acupuncturist, on the other hand, can produce the same or better results much faster in a few affordable and painless sessions.

They stick a bunch of needles here and there, and the ailments seem to go away. It's an ancient technique that originated in China, and the science of it has since been perfected over the last 2,500 or so years. It is now an essential part of TCM (traditional Chinese medicine).

An acupuncturist should in theory know the exact location of all the 2,000 pressure points in the body. These points are connected by pathways that allow energy flows throughout the body. This flow of energy called Qi is supposed to be restored back to normalcy when the needles correct the imbalances. It provides great relief from whatever pains and ailments a person is feeling in that specific part or region of the body.

It's supposed to be a holistic solution that is highly effective at providing relief from pain in the lower back. The best part is that it does so by getting rid of the root cause of the problem, rather than just acting as a painkiller for suppressing symptoms. It wakes up the entire central nervous system and the body starts experiencing a sense of well-being.

It's a science that needs to be practiced only by licensed and well qualified acupuncturists. Patients need to ask these questions beforehand, and find out about the rate per session and the total number of sessions that may be required. The licensing is also important because that's the only way the cost may be covered by a patient's health plan, if at all.

On a more general note, acupuncture is not just a technique for gaining relief from back pain. It can help with many different ailments such as digestive disorders, depression, migraines, chronic asthma and fibromyalgia, to name a few. It can even help addicts who feel all kinds of withdrawal symptoms when they try to give up their dependence on drugs.
